WHAT WE DO

Sidewalk Trip Hazard Repair

Concrete sidewalks often fail prematurely. Although their service life can exceed 80 years, most cities only expect sidewalks to last for 25. As they become uneven through soil settling or tree root growth it creates safety risks which must be managed. Without attempting remediation, cities sometimes replace pads at significant cost. UCG repairs trip hazards and levels uneven concrete by grinding, also called scarifying.

While there are several methods for fixing sidewalks, grinding is among the most cost-effective and yields excellent functional and aesthetic results as the pads are left flush and uniform with a broom finish. It requires far less time and fewer steps to grind down a hazard than to demolish, remove, and re-pour a new pad, which is why the cost savings are so substantial compared with full replacement. It is also much faster for high-volume projects than mudjacking, which is more suitable for large slabs such as driveways or highway sections or sidewalks with significant sinking.

Our grinding process is a more cost-efficient substitute for horizontal saw-cutting, which is sometimes referred to as concrete slicing or concrete shaving. Some methods are described as track-sawing or equipment-mounted sawing.

Grinding will usually solve the problem for 5-10 years and comply with ADA requirements. As you can see in the photo below, a grind from 2019 shows no additional deterioration from purported microcracking or exposing the aggregate matrix beneath the surface. So while there is a cosmetic impact which fades over time, there is no structural impairment.

UCG employs a dry method instead of wet, so we leave no slurry. Instead, we provide highly-efficient dust control via commercial HEPA filters. We offer industry-standard GPS capabilities, serving municipal, commercial, institutional, and other governmental clients, nationwide. We are happy to respond to your RFPs and RFQs as your capital project's solicitation process requires. We are also available for subcontracting.

Please note that we do not service individual homes or homeowners. We typically handle hazards up to 2" in height, as beyond that replacement is preferred, as well as for crumbling pads.

UCG has been reliably providing expert service since 2016.
